29 In science, the class completed two investigations to think about scientific inquiry and answer the essential question: how can we observe the unobservable? They built a “story” using a set group of words that they slowly added to. They compared their stories (theories!) in groups and discussed how the understanding of the story changed with each new piece of evidence. Next, they thought about the same questions during a “Mystery Box” investigation. Students literally needed to observe the unobservable to make a diagram of what they thought the inside of their box looked life. Students enthusiastically tested their ideas, shared their findings, and explored as individuals and as a group. 12:15 | SCIENCE WITH MS. LITTLEFIELD At the beginning of the year, students in Grade 5 choose to take either French, Spanish, or Hebrew, which are core classes held four times per rotation. At this level, language classes focus on language basics such as greetings, daily life, school, and leisure activities through reading, writing, repetition, listening, and speaking activities such as games, songs, and projects. 1:15 | WORLD LANGUAGE Grades 5 and 6 come together at the end of the day for vocabulary games and book club in mixed-grade groups based on interest and readiness. Groups read independently, then discuss the book using literature circle role prompts, or challenge each other to a game of vocabulary Hedbanz (each student wears a card with a vocabulary term on their forehead and has to guess what word they’re wearing by asking questions to their teammates) or toss and answer (tossing a ball into a cup and defining the word their ball lands on). 2:10 | VOCABULARY REVIEW & BOOK CLUB Grades 5-8 eat lunch together in the Dining Hall, with students given the freedom to choose whom they sit with each day. It’s common to see students from different grades sitting together. 11:40 | LUNCH A special thank you to our Middle School faculty, particularly our core 5/6 teachers Caitlin Littlefield and Chelsea Zinck! They are passionate teachers who truly know and care for their students. Their dedication is remarkable and has a positive, lasting impact on our students and our school.
